What is stress?
What is stress? Stress is a response to external demands or pressures, whether physical or psychological, and is thus not a disease. Discomfort arises as a result of demands and pressures exceeding our resources to handle them.
Our body and mind are designed to withstand short-term stress, such as during a move, an exam, or a job change. It is a natural and healthy response that helps us manage an external burden here and now. The body releases hormones that enable us to perform. Experiencing occasional stress is a life condition that is harmless.
However, if we are exposed to demands or pressures for an extended period (weeks to months), it can develop into prolonged stress. It is disadvantageous to remain in a state of stress for long periods at a time, and it can lead to a wide range of symptoms, both physical, psychological, and behavioral.
How does stress feel?
Stress is experienced differently from person to person, and as described above, symptoms can manifest as physical, psychological, and behavioral. Commonly seen symptoms of chronic stress include:
- Reduced energy levels
- Lack of vitality
- Lowered mood
- Indecisiveness
- Heart palpitations
- Tendency to cry easily
- Difficulty sleeping
- Chest tightness and shortness of breath
- Memory difficulties
- Reduced immune function
- Muscle tension
- Increased use of stimulants such as coffee and drugs

Try being curious about...
It can be difficult to know if you're under more pressure than usual, and when we're stressed, we actually tend to try to maintain the feeling of stress because it gives us the ability to perform and act. You can benefit from being curious about whether you:
- Experience difficulty sleeping due to racing thoughts about all your tasks
- Have trouble remembering your appointments, conversations with others, or how to get from A to B
- Struggle to focus
- Feel tired and down/irritable
- Have difficulty maintaining a normal level of function in daily life - for example, finding it hard to get up, clean, shop, do laundry, and so on
If you recognize yourself in the above, it may be a sign that you're under more pressure than is appropriate. It's important to address the situation and figure out how to create more calmness and balance. You might want to check out this guide with suggestions for stress-reducing activities.
In a therapy process with me, we will together explore the factors contributing to stress in your life. What does your daily life look like? How is your level of functioning and vitality? What thoughts do you have about your current life situation? What does well-being mean to you? What core values do you have, and how can you create a life in line with them, free from stress? I will inquire curiously about you, your history, and your current life situation, and together we will uncover what you want for yourself and your life. Therapy will thus always be tailored to what you need and have the energy for.
