What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural and necessary emotion for humans, as it is essential for our survival that we can react with fear when we encounter danger. Our body releases hormones that enable us to react quickly and seek safety.
For some, the anxiety response can become overactive, and anxiety can occur without a 'natural' explanation or trigger - for example, during a shopping trip or when taking the bus. In these situations, our survival is not threatened, but for those suffering from anxiety, the body behaves as if it is in mortal danger. This can be incredibly inhibiting for daily functioning and overall quality of life.
There are different types of anxiety, and what triggers an anxiety disorder in people varies. The severity also varies, ranging from nervousness and overthinking to panic attacks.
What does anxiety feel like?
Anxiety manifests differently in us humans and, like stress, can be experienced with physical and psychological symptoms, such as:
- Racing thoughts
- Worries and catastrophic thoughts
- Trembling hands
- Heart palpitations
- Stomach discomfort
- Dizziness
- Tendency to freeze or sweat excessively
- Muscle tension
- Tendency to avoid certain things, places, or situations
Try being curious about...
Anxiety, as described above, is a natural and adaptive reaction that ensures our survival. However, when anxiety starts to dominate daily life, it can have an inhibiting effect on our level of functioning and quality of life. You may benefit from being inquisitive about whether you:
- Spend a considerable amount of time and energy worrying
- Frequently ponder whether things will go wrong for you
- Experience heart palpitations and frequent muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, or jaw
- Have difficulty sleeping due to racing thoughts
- Avoid specific places or situations because you fear what might happen or are afraid of something specific happening
It can be challenging to figure out how to live life when everyday life is marked by anxiety, negative thoughts, and avoidance, and many people find it difficult to talk to friends and family about the thoughts that fill their minds.
In a therapy process with me, we will together explore the factors contributing to anxiety or apprehension in your life. What does your daily life look like? How do you experience anxiety and worry in your life? What kind of life do you want to live? I will ask curiously and openly about you, your situation, and your history to uncover what you want for yourself and your life. Therapy will thus always be tailored to what you need and have the capacity for.
