What is a life crisis?

A crisis can be defined as 'a sudden disruption of normal life activity and the continuous course of life' - in other words: when life, for some reason, suddenly changes drastically.

The word 'crisis' means turning point, disruption, or change. Life crises are a part of ordinary human life - unlike traumatic crises, which are something else. Although life crises are normal and something we all experience, it does not change the fact that it can be intense, painful, and overwhelming to experience and go through. Life crises can shake us, throw us off course, and it can be difficult to regain balance in our lives.

What causes a life crisis?

It's very individual what triggers the experience of being in a life crisis. It can arise from factors such as:

  • Illness
  • Divorce
  • Job loss
  • Death
  • Failing a task or project
  • Transitions between "life phases"
  • Major life changes such as graduating, becoming a parent, or moving

So, what can trigger a life crisis varies greatly, and it's not experienced in the same way by everyone.

How does it feel?

Life crises are existential, concerning the conditions of being a living person with both ups and downs in life. A life crisis typically brings a sense that something is not as it should be, and one may experience:

  • Feelings of meaninglessness
  • Discontent with life
  • Feeling trapped

Life crises often involve our relationships with other people and the world around us. Central to the life crisis are typically existential themes such as choices and meaning.

Try being curious about...

The life crisis is universal and natural but can bring about overwhelming thoughts and feelings. You may benefit from being inquisitive about whether you experience:

  • Something in your life not being as it should be
  • Feeling dissatisfied with your existence
  • Feeling like you should do something, but not knowing what it is
  • Often spending energy trying to convince yourself that "things are as they should be" or that "there's nothing wrong," even though you have an inner voice or gut feeling telling you otherwise

If you recognize yourself in the above, it may be a sign that you are in a life crisis and need to take action. Many experience greater life satisfaction and a sense of meaning after going through a life crisis than before.

Navigating through a life crisis can be a difficult, demanding, and unsettling process, and it can be beneficial to have professional guidance and support.

In a therapy process with me, we will together be curious about what your life looks like. What do you think and feel about your life? What brings you joy? When do you feel energy and vitality? What core values do you have, and how can you live in alignment with them? I will ask curiously and openly about you, your history, and your current life situation. Therapy will thus be based on you, your needs, and your desires for your existence.
