What is depression?

We can all experience sadness, grief, or crisis; it's part of life for all of us. But it's not the same as having a depression. Depression is a serious disorder where one has been feeling down, tired, and devoid of energy for an extended period of time. It can be challenging to find the motivation and energy to function and do things, including activities that one usually enjoys, such as having a coffee date with a friend or partner, spending quality time with family, or going for a walk in nature.

Depression creates a prevailing mood of hopelessness and/or sadness, without necessarily being able to pinpoint an immediate cause for it. Many depressed individuals describe the sadness as often feeling like an emptiness and indifference towards life.

It's important to take it seriously if you have depression so you can get the right help and treatment. Psychotherapy is a crucial part of treating depression, and for more severe cases, medication may be supplemented.

What does depression feel like?

Depression comes in various degrees, depending on the extent and amount of symptoms. Depression affects both body and mind, and typical symptoms include:

  • Deep feelings of sadness and despair
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Everything feels hopeless and meaningless
  • Self-blame and guilt
  • Social isolation
  • Sleep problems
  • Low self-esteem
  • Headaches
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Tension in the neck and back
  • Suicidal thoughts

Try being curious about...

It can be difficult to know if you have a depression, and many don't know when their depressive thoughts and feelings even started. You can ask yourself if, for a prolonged period, you have:

  • Experienced being tired, exhausted, and devoid of energy
  • Easily experienced feelings of sadness, irritability, or depression
  • Struggled to find joy in things that usually make you happy
  • Felt a sense of emptiness and meaninglessness
  • Been prone to isolate yourself socially
  • Experienced increased or decreased appetite

Having depression can feel overwhelming, and it can be challenging to recognize yourself. It's important to get the right help to regain energy and joy in everyday life.

Knowledge about depression is an essential part of treatment. In a counseling process with me, we will therefore investigate together how the depression manifests for you. I will ask openly and curiously about you, your daily life, and your history, and together we will explore your personal values and what is meaningful and important to you in your life.
