What is ADHD/ADD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder, denoting the same condition without the hyperactive aspect. It's called 'hyperkinetic disorder' or 'attention deficit disorder', as it involves a lack of ability to control and sustain attention. ADHD is complex, affecting individuals in various aspects of life, and therefore manifests differently within different people. For some with ADHD, the primary challenge is inattention, while for others, it may be hyperactivity and an inability to find peace and calm. Many experience difficulty in introspection, often pushing themselves excessively.

ADHD is a diagnosis often identified in childhood, but an increasing number of adults are also diagnosed. Medical treatment for ADHD or ADD is offered to alleviate symptoms and create mental tranquility, but many complement it with psychotherapy to gain deeper understanding of their diagnosis and acquire effective strategies for managing daily life.

What is life like with ADHD?

Individuals with ADHD often experience overactive thinking, where thoughts dart around and constantly distract one another. It can feel like receiving "input from all channels" all the time, making them easily distracted by their own thoughts, sensory stimuli like sounds and smells, and movements in their surroundings. This means that individuals with ADHD deplete their 'battery' faster, as it's very energy-intensive not to be able to filter impressions.

Difficulties are seen in various areas:

  • Ability to create overview and structure
  • Ability to contain and regulate emotions
  • Initiation/getting started
  • Impulse control
  • Prioritization
  • Motivation
  • Sleep disturbances

Many with ADHD also describe positive aspects, such as the ability to hyperfocus on a task for hours, immersed in it deeply. Additionally, the overactive thinking can foster creative ideas and projects. However, it's essential to structure one's daily life in a way that accommodates the challenges that come with having ADHD.

It is important to understand one's own diagnosis and what it means to have ADHD/ADD for you. Diagnoses are human-made labels intended to describe a condition, making it easier to provide the best treatment. There are many commonalities among people with ADHD, but you are not defined by your ADHD. You are a unique individual, and your diagnosis is expressed in interaction with your personality, upbringing, history, and current life situation.

Therefore, in a therapy process, I will emphasize helping you gain a greater understanding of your diagnosis and how it plays a role specifically for you in your life - based on your personal history and current life situation. Therapy will thus be tailored to what you need and have the capacity for.
